Think of it as clear labelling

A visitor can often understand whether a page describes a service, an article or a product from its layout and language. Structured data provides explicit labels for software. A common format is JSON-LD, which describes the relevant information in a block of code.

The vocabulary often comes from Schema.org. Different types have different properties. Choosing an appropriate type is more useful than adding as much markup as possible.

What might a service business use?

  • Organization: factual information about the business.
  • WebSite: information about the website itself.
  • Service: a service the business actually provides.
  • BreadcrumbList: the page’s position in the site structure.
  • Article: a genuine editorial guide or article.

Use only the details you can support. A service business should not invent a review rating or office address to complete a template. If the information is unknown, resolve the fact or omit an optional property.

Structured data is not a ranking switch

Markup can support interpretation and eligibility for certain search features, where those features apply. It cannot turn a weak page into a useful answer. Search engines also apply their own rules, so technically valid markup does not guarantee a visible enhancement.

Do not assume that every Schema.org type creates a Google rich result. Vocabulary support and search-feature eligibility are different things.

What about FAQs and AI?

FAQs can be valuable as visible content when they answer genuine questions. Google discontinued FAQ rich results in May 2026. Keep useful questions and answers on the page, but do not add FAQ markup in expectation of a Google FAQ search enhancement.

There is no special Google AI Overview schema requirement. Clear writing, accurate facts and a useful structure should come first. Our AI-search guide explains the wider work.

How to implement it sensibly

  1. Identify the real purpose of the page.
  2. Select the appropriate type and supported properties.
  3. Use information that matches the visible content.
  4. Validate the markup and check any relevant search-engine guidance.
  5. Keep the data updated when the business or page changes.

Review plugins before adding custom markup, especially on WordPress. Duplicated or contradictory blocks make maintenance harder. Structured data belongs within the wider on-page SEO process, alongside the actual content it describes.

Questions, answered.

Can schema guarantee an AI citation?

No. Structured data describes information; AI systems still decide which sources to use.

Should I mark up testimonials I have not verified?

No. Markup must accurately reflect genuine, visible content. Never invent ratings, reviews or business facts.
